Keratosis pilaris definition Keratosis pilaris is a form of ichthyosis, a skin disease characterized by drought and the presence of dander (skin scales) like fish scales, giving the skin a rough look. The disease is transmitted following the dominant mode (just one parent has the genetic abnormality than the child will get the disease) or the recessive mode (it is necessary that both parents carry the genetic defect for that the child to get the disease).

Keratosis pilaris is characterized by a state of dryness of the skin but also by small elevations of the stratum corneum, which is also dry, surrounded by a little atrophied zone. This variety of ichthyosis localises at the posterior of arm, the outside of the thigh, sometimes on the face where it is associated with redness and atrophy (decrease) of the skin. Treatments have a goal of providing an improvement in the appearance of the skin and make the skin softer to the touch. In moderate forms, if there is no discomfort, no keratosis pilaris treatment is necessary. Local treatments are sufficient in the limited forms. It combines bath emollients, creams that have a "peeling" effect on limited areas and local strippers treatment . The treatments with tretinoin may give good results. Keratosis Pilaris can be treated with laser; "red lesions (KTP laser, pulsed dye laser) can provide an improvement in erythema and skin roughness.
